Excite - News: "U.S. Mideast Commander Escapes RPG Fire in Iraq | Feb 12, 3:42 pm ET |By Michael Georgy

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. commander in the Middle East, Gen. John Abizaid, escaped unscathed Thursday when guerrillas fired rocket-propelled grenades at his convoy in an Iraqi town noted for attacks on U.S. forces.

The U.S. military said it was not clear whether the attackers knew Abizaid and the U.S. commander in the area, Maj.-Gen. Charles Swannack, were in the convoy in Falluja, west of Baghdad. Neither they nor other U.S. personnel were hit.

But the incident, following two suicide bombings that killed at least 100 Iraqis this week, spotlighted the security problems that figure large in a heated debate about how the United States will hand power back to Iraqis."

Excite - News: "Suicide Car Bomb Kills 47 at Baghdad Army Center | Feb 11, 7:56 am ET | By C. Bryson Hull

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide car bomb exploded at an Iraqi army recruitment center in Baghdad Wednesday, killing 47 people and taking the 24-hour death toll in attacks against Iraqis working with the U.S. occupation up to 100.

'It was a suicide attack by a single male,' U.S. Colonel Ralph Baker told Reuters at the scene.

'It was aimed strictly at Iraqis,' he said, adding that the car had been laden with 300 to 500 pounds of plastic explosives mixed with artillery shells to maximize the 'kill effect.'

Maj. John Frisbie said the death toll was at least 36, including the bomber, with 15 more wounded, but hospitals later said they had received 44 dead and 55 wounded. Three of the injured later died from their wounds.

Around 53 people were killed Tuesday in a similar attack on Iraqis outside a police station south of Baghdad.

The police force and new army are central to Washington's plan to hand over power to Iraqis by June 30. Most of Wednesday's victims were newly recruited soldiers reporting for duty." ...
